A statement on the passing of Pope Francis from Jim Mullen, president and CEO of Catholic Charities, Catholic Diocese of Cleveland.
As shared by Bishop Ed Malesic and with our Catholic colleagues and people worldwide, we mourn the loss of our Holy Father, Pope Francis. Pope Francis truly inspired our work as Catholic Charities, Diocese of Cleveland, through his view that all persons are worthy. His emphasis on the most vital issues facing the people we serve was the root of this inspiration. His focus on addressing poverty, feeding the hungry, housing people experiencing homelessness, treating the mentally ill, and taking in refugees are all core teachings of the gospel and at the core of what Catholic Charities provides each day to our local community. His focus allowed our work and our clients to feel the love and care of his Catholic Church.
Pope Francis was authentic in his approach to living out the teachings of the gospel. He embraced the highest calling to be Christlike in all he did and provided to the Catholic Church and the world. His humility and engagement were second to none, and he often could be found serving people in need and crisis. He led our church through example and care and was a shining example of leading a faithful and fulfilling life.
As we look ahead, we will do what Pope Francis always asked: pray. We pray for Pope Francis, the example he set, and all of us as we mourn his loss.
